CharlieBramald Landed out of nowhere and it's a winner!! Melodic as all heck, with hooks for days, great grooves, and packed with great lyrics, whimsy and has a lot of fun with the (in some places) acerbic commentary. A perfect balance of all things. This album will get a lot of repeats. Favorite track: This Great Adventure.

novacascade The entire album is a revelation imo. Imagine trick of the tail getting a major sonic makeover and you may be getting close. The precision & craftsmanship with which each track has been obviously scrutinized and perfected is outstanding. The opening of the closing track has to be one of the most triumphantly stirring I've heard in quite some time. An easy maximum for me 10/10 Favorite track: This Great Adventure.

Wait, there's a big new announcement coming Sit in your chair with your fingers drumming, patiently in time We'll make cuts to cuts that we cut to ribbons Beg for the scraps that you might be given, pay for your crime Look around, up ahead in the dark That shimmering light at the end of the tunnel Is the light of an oncoming train And if you think that you are going down fast We can make it faster Better start hoarding the big disaster's coming your way When we sell off the shit that we said was sacred Strip Florence Nightingale bare ass naked Watch us and pray That we don't set the hounds on the welfare losers Start a tsunami of wheelchair users Circling the drain Lies and damned lies and statistics They don't understand Simple minded, foreluck tuggers Eating out of the palm of your hand Well we're making the most of the situation Tear out the heart of a once great nation To hell with free and fair elections They don't get to choose. When your batshit crazy armed militias raise all kinds of hell We all lose Au revior Civil Rights, guess you just don't need em' Burned on the bonfire that some call freedom . . . FEMA got a system - a chart they like to pull up And grade those disasters neatly If they're still selling pancakes The grid ain't down completely A twister tossed my trailer 'bout halfway to Australia Now I'm sat in the IHOP alone Maybe someday soon I'm gon' get my life back But I'll take a little syrup to drown my . . . Drown my short stack Now the Orange Messiah's immune to scandal Breitbart and Bannon and Ayn Rand's vandals Leading the song With imflamatory headlines and big, bright pictures Playing to paranoid curtain-twitchers What could go wrong? But in the People's Republic of Cafe Nero Somebody's snowfalke is someone's hero Proudly surveying the scene Now that the transgender bathrooms are clean . . .

After Dark 04:51
I wait for nightfall when the darkness comes around And make my way without a sound I walk through nightmare places shutting out the day And I don't hear a thing that you say Hiding in shadows I can travel undisturbed And you don't know the rules of my game Afraid of daylight, under a canopy of clouds I find my way back home again Feeling by instinct I can safely stay If I wait a moment longer Will the fire put out the spark What doesn't kill me makes me stronger After dark . . . Then in the morning I am dead to all the world Nothing wakes me from my sleep I can't imagine what you'd do if were me The answers are all yours to keep Just close your eyes and go to sleep now, stay in bed Forget the world around you, disconnect your head And while you're sleeping and the night is fading fast And nothing I can say will make it last And nothing I can say will make it go away If I wait a moment longer Will the fire give up the spark What doesn't kill me makes me stronger After dark . . . If I wait a little longer Will the fire give up the spark What doesn't kill me makes me stronger After dark . . After dark . .

Being There 07:04
If I thought it would help I'd make the bastards realise how great you were But I know it won't help The background noise of deathless mediocrity, is way too loud - oh so loud I couldn't quite believe it, when I heard that you had died The tabloids said his heart couldn't take the pace A day or so of reminiscing then it all went very quiet Now there's no-one left alive to take your place The man who couldn't find himself submerged beneath the voices Completely taken over by the role There was Strangelove, Kite and Quilty But a host of unwise choices The genius who couldn't find a soul . . . What a heavy weight to carry All the baggage stardom brings And there's Spike, and Mike and Harry Always watching from the wings If I thought it would help I'd find some better words to process what this means But I know it won't help A clueless French detective is all that matters it seems, it seems All the parties, all the starlets, all the crazy paper talk Can't drown out Kubrik nailing Kissenger, Mein Fuhrer I can walk! And when you died you hadn't realised the potential of your life And there's not much point in saying you had so much more to give But if it makes it easier I felt so much better for your Being There . . .

Cold Comfort 04:32
Without rhyme or reason you understand nothing at all You're looking for answers to questions you can't quite recall Yes it okay Guess it's alright to be down on your luck Nothing can hold you they told you, you ate every word Now you choked on the bittersweet tang of the faintly absurd Get on your bike, I've got a bridge you can buy if you like You know, sometimes, the moon looks redder than your eyes Don't kill anybody yet When the soles of your preachers are wearing through There are losers out there who are envying you But it's all cold comfort now Nothing can hold you they told you, you ate every word And you choked on the bittersweet tang of the faintly absurd Get on your bike, I've got a bridge you can buy if you like You know, sometimes, the moon looks redder than your eyes Don't kill anybody yet When you're running like hell just to catch the train There are parties onboard who might share your pain And when the soles of your preachers are wearing through There are losers out there who are envying you But it's all cold comfort now

Contender 04:30
You found the money in the Gap bag next to the dope Now you're showering in the Big House, trying not to pick up the soap You never had a clue Danny, you little innocent you Danny Boy, well I ..... I wouldn't wanna' scare you needlessly, but that beaut in maximum security Says that you're his bitch tonight You stuffed the body down the storm drain out by the bins Now your brief says he can sort it, but he's pissing in the wind You should have stayed at home Danny, and never be let out on your own Danny Boy Well I hope, you're happy here in purgatory, bouncing off the walls in solitary And you won't get out for years and years You're gonna' be banged up for life, a repeat offender Don't come crying to me at night You could have been a contender. a contender, a contender Ooh, do you ever dream of going straight, seriously? Or would you like some more powdered glass in your tea? Did the screws complain about the noise, when the boys took their liberty? Well that degree in Social Studies really soaked up the time You've got yourself a prison visitor groupie, she says she's fascinated by crime And now you're gonna' nail her, in the conjugal trailer Danny Boy If your peccadillos go beyond the pale, she can sell the story to the Daily Mail And you might get out before you die And when they release you on bail We'll go on a massive bender The celebrity too big for jail And suddenly a contender, a contender, a contender, a contender, a contender, a Contender ....

There was once a time when I, believed that I could get away with anything And so I tried everything Then my little vampire came, she looked me up and down and then I do anything I'd promise her anything Then she would pierce me, with those ingenue eyes Oh the tears the silences, the shivering sighs And the whispered lies Hold on, now the little vampires come With their mouths mostly red They have sucked the life out of someone I won't spend another night alone Deep down in my darkest night, I hold this pillow close I named it after you, look how the tears soak through And if I die before I wake I pray the Lord forgets to take me seriously They'll say he died of nothing else to do Oh but don't let it get to you The angels that I see, are here for me Hold on, now the little vampires come With their mouths mostly red They have sucked the life out of someone I won't spend another night alone I said I'd paint the sky for you Oh I said I'd do it just like Bob Ross'd do Titanium white for the happy little clouds Cadmium yellow and maybe Just maybe, a touch of alizarin crimson The feelgood story of the year Died with the telling, there are no winners here Same as ever I fear Hold on, now the little vampires come With their mouths mostly red They have sucked the life out of someone I won't spend another night alone

No Idea 05:13
I still recall what I was going through Brings me out in a cold sweat There must be some way to beat this But i haven't found it yet Starting to panic Where's my deodorant? Please God don't let it rain I had a shower, I lost my razor I had a shower again And I don't know what it means to you The facts are there to see And I don't know what it means to you Or what you feel Meaning to make a good impression I will change the way I look Can't bring myself to face a mirror In case my ego comes unstuck No good at small talk, making advances I don't know where to start I'm wrapped too tight, for taking chances My head still rules my heart And I don't know what it means to you The facts are there to see And I don't know what it means to you Or what you feel, for me I sat and talked about myself all night Just like treading water Lost in a coma of romance I was drowned in caution I should have noticed, and moved in closer No matter how I tried My better angels comspired against me My hands remained at my side And I don't know what it means to you The facts are there to see And I don't know what it means to you Or what you feel But it's not so simple If you don't remember this A miss is just a miss A lie, a lie Better not ask why I've just got No Idea I've just got No Idea

Well it might not turn out like we planned But that's something we already know A case of supply and demand But there's no-one demanding another show We crept out of the bedroom and into the streets Thinking nothing could get in our way But we don't get the cynics up out of their seats Who listens to fools like us anyway The rest of the world can go hide it's head in the sand I don't care about that Cos it's English electric and wired to the boys in the band Well it feels like a white knuckle ride But I'm certain we're dragging our feet And the last thing to go is the pride Then the long, screaming nosedive that ends in defeat From the van to the stage, to the deathless indifference That passes round here for a crowd From the stage to the van to the tandoori chicken hey Rock 'n' roll, shout it out loud The rest of the world are circling round our last stand I don't care about that Cos it's English, electric and wired to the boys in the band Soon we'll be coming to your town, sweeping the nation Not noticably trapped, or weighed down by expectation I could have been someone, but I was having fun Oh the cool pyrotechnics and indifferent summers Like punk never happened, and too many drummers . . . From the van to the stage, to the deathless indifference That passes round here for a crowd From the stage to the van to the tandoori chickenhey, rock 'n' roll, shout it out loud The rest of the world are circling round our last stand I don't care about that Cos it's English, electric and wired to the boys in the band It's English, electric and wired to the boys in the band

Welcome Home 04:08
Well we eat too much and drink a lot But it's more than you deserve We can get you anything you like If you feel you need the service Is he really English? Wow that's neat wow that's neat, would you like to know my feelings? 'cos i know what colour paint they used on a hundred bedroom ceilings I suspected my morality Was about to suffer fataly He's our latest conversation piece, Isn't life full of surprises? But he won't learn to enjoy himself So we'll teach him all our vices When I took your breakfast up I nearly dropped the tray You only wore a telling smile so I ran the other way This freedom's way too much for me I just can't handle this depravity Now nectar to you is poison to me I'm socially paralyzed and partially hypnotised Waiting for the plane Welcome Home I've witnessed all my fantasies Performed before my very eyes It's everyday reality, prosperity's normality They tell me it's too soon to tell I haven't got a hope in hell Now nectar to you, is nectar to me 'cos once you get used to it You develop a taste for it I'm taking my leave, I'm packing my case The English on foreign shores I'm missing the cricket scores I suppose I can't complain Welcome Home

It’s a strange kinda dreamin’, there’s a girl in my head, and she’s tellin’ me what to do She says I gotta wake up, pulls my head from the sand, it’s time to be a man, not a fool But the rain falls, .. the phone calls, and my thread unwinds, and I hold my hands to the sky And I sit and I watch and I wait, I put my mind to it all, and I sing my twelve bore blues It’s an odd kinda feelin’, that girl’s here again, she keeps tellin’ me more to do She says I gotta grow some, take my life in my hands, I know what she says, it’s all true I call this great adventure, my perfect world, if only that were true It’s no small thing I grind my, perfect mind Pour me another one, you can pour me another one I call this dream I hide in, my ideal life, and I know what to do One day soon I’ll find the, perfect time Pour me another one, call me a cab again And I would swap the next ten years to jump back twenty, with the knowledge I have now, well I have no regrets, maybe just one or two Somewhere in every nation, there's a voice in the crowd, and it's telling you what to do, Take the whole congregation and the whole of your life, deep down you know that it’s you And the rain falls, the phone calls, and I talk this time, then I hold my hands to the sky And I sit and I watch and I wait, I put my mind to it all, and I sing my twelve bore blues I call this great adventure my perfect girl, (yes) she tells me what to do Even when I go to ground or fall down She pours me another one, She pours me another one, She gets in my head again, Call me that damn cab again, And I would swap the next ten years to jump back twenty, with the knowledge I have now. I have no regrets, well maybe just two See me run, see me hide, catch me when I fall Watch me wake, watch me sleep, catch me when I fall

released August 13, 2023

This album is dedicated to 'Achilles' and all its members and friends: Wob, Dave Buckley, Pete Dover, Steve and Phil Burns, Mark Williams, Norman Rowlands; Gordon and Dorothy, Chris and Barney, Jack and Joan, Barbara and Terry; Dave Williams, PaulaC, Toni, Fran and Jez, Kate, LesG and NeilE, Mad Andy Craven and Chris Nagle

David Edwards - Absolutely marvellous - such fun and full of light, with accessible prog and diversity. A breath of fresh air!

Robert Webb - This is a brilliant album, masterly performed ...and full of very appealing musical ideas. Although it contains many 'progressive' elements I found it both refreshing and relaxing to hear music in 4-beats-to-a-bar. Terrific work David and Colin (and John and Peter)

Aldo Pertici: The best prog album I've listened to in a lot of years

Leigh Eastwood: The album is that rare thing, an instantly accessible album that grows with each listening
